SS 316L consists of 16–18% chromium, 10–14% nickel, and 2–3% molybdenum, with a carbon content of less than 0.03%. This low carbon level assists in preventing sensitization as well as intergranular corrosion. Some mechanical properties are tensile strength of 485 MPa, yield strength of 170 MPa, and elongation of 40%. SS 316L possesses exceptional resistance to pitting, crevice corrosion, and chloride-induced corrosion. The alloy retains good mechanical properties in low and high temperatures and is weldable without post-weld annealing, rendering it very versatile.
