SS 317L has about 18–20% chromium, 11–15% nickel, and 3–4% molybdenum, with a carbon percentage less than 0.03% for enhanced corrosion resistance and weldability. The alloy provides a tensile strength of approximately 515 MPa, yield strength of 205 MPa, and elongation of 40%. It also provides good resistance against pitting, crevice corrosion, and chemical attack in acidic conditions. The low carbon facilitates avoidance of carbide precipitation under welding, thus it is acceptable for corrosive and high-temperature services. SS 317L retains its mechanical properties in high–moisture and chloride–rich environments.
