Stainless Steel XM-19 fasteners are made of a high-manganese, high-nitrogen austenitic alloy commonly known as Nitronic 50. The major composition is about 21-23% Chromium, 11-13% Nickel, 4-6% Manganese, and 0.20-0.40% Nitrogen, with traces of other elements. This special combination gives it outstanding mechanical properties: a tensile strength of usually 690-1035 MPa (100-150 ksi), and a yield strength of 345-690 MPa (50-100 ksi). It has remarkable ductility and toughness, even under cryogenic conditions, and is stronger than the ordinary 300 series stainless steels.
