The martensitic stainless steel alloy known as stainless steel 418 is distinguished by its excellent strength, consistent wear resistance, and high hardness. 12–14% chromium, 0.15–0.25% carbon, and trace amounts of manganese, silicon, and phosphorus make up its composition. While the alloy does not match the corrosion resistance of austenitic grades such as SS 304, it does perform well in mildly corrosive environments. Heat treatment can harden SS 418, giving it a hardness of up to 45 HRC and a tensile strength of about 650 MPa. It is appropriate for mechanical and structural applications under high stress because of these qualities.
