The composition of stainless steel 316 fasteners, which includes molybdenum (2–3%), nickel (10–14%), and chromium (16–18%), greatly improves resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, especially in chloride environments. These fasteners have good elongation (~40%), a yield strength of about 205 MPa, and a tensile strength of about 515 MPa. Even at very high temperatures, their austenitic microstructure guarantees exceptional toughness and ductility. 316 differs from 304 due to the addition of molybdenum, which makes it more appropriate for harsh conditions. Applications needing mechanical strength and resistance to saltwater or corrosive chemicals are best suited for SS 316 fasteners.
