Stainless steel 422 fasteners have around 12% chromium, 1% molybdenum, and 0.2–0.4% carbon, along with vanadium added for higher high-temperature strength. These fasteners can be heat-treated to a tensile strength of greater than 1000 MPa and retain mechanical strength up to 1200°F (649°C). The alloy is ferromagnetic and has good resistance to oxidation at high temperatures. 422 stainless steel is best suited for parts in thermal fatigue and creep service. While corrosion resistance is medium, it is appropriate where high mechanical performance and thermal stability are needed in the environment.
